Dark Under Eye Circles: Causes & Cures

Are you suffering from dark circles and puffy eyes? Wondering what causes them and how to get rid of them? Read this article for answers.

If there are dark circles under your eyes you might look up to ten years older or more than you really are. Along with making you look older, dark under eye circles can make you appear tired, washed up, unhealthy, and even sick if you aren’t presently ill. Are you curious as to what is causing the dark circles and how you can go about curing them? Keep reading you and you will find out all the answers.

Causes Of Dark Circles

Let’s begin by reviewing and understanding the cause of dark under eye circles. When you are deprived of sleep or interrupted often during sleep the dark circles can appear under your eyes, however these aren’t the only cause. Inflammation of the nasal cavities, as well as congestion of the sinuses can play a large role in dark circles. This is because the blood is unable to flow through the tiny vessels around your eyes. Dark Chocolate Gifts Idea That Boosts the Mood and More

Looking for a sweet gift idea for family, friends or clients? Get familiar with a "happy chocolate" that will have an impact long after it melts in the mouth.

Chocolate has long been a consideration as a gift-giving idea that is sure to bring a level of excitement to any recipient. Dark chocolate is now getting more of a focus as an option for such due to its healthy antioxidant factors. But is there a dark chocolate gifts idea that will not only please the palate but put one in a good mood, give more natural energy and satisfy cravings for sweets all at the same time?

Dr Paul Anderson over the years has developed non-drug and nutritional remedies for people suffering from chronic pain and depression. He has now created a solution for people that not only need to curb their unhealthy cravings for sweets but also a sustained mood elevation as well. "It’s a dietary supplement. We’ve put amino acids, vitamins and minerals but we happen to put them into a chocolate and the reason we put them into a chocolate is chocolate potentiates or makes the nutrients work better." The good doctor further states that "it really is about turning on that brain, elevating that mood".

How Is Bipolar Disorder Treated?

As a disorder of the brain, bipolar disorder is generally classified as a psychiatric or mental illness. However, it can just as easily be thought of as a medical condition because scientific research has revealed significant evidence showing an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Because of that, a treatment plan for bipolar disorder primarily consists of pharmacological intervention (medications) and sometimes psychological therapy. At times, psychiatric hospitalizations may be necessary to safely reach a point of stability. There are also treatment options that are less common and those that are usually considered only in extreme circumstances.

Medicines for Bipolar Disorder
The primary goal of drug treatment is to stabilize the extreme mood swings of mania and depression. It is also common for medications to be prescribed for extreme symptoms such as psychosis or co-occurring disorders such as anxiety. As you would expect, the list of medications that can be prescribed is vast. However, they generally fall into the following categories:

    Anti-Anxiety and Sedatives
    Antidepressants
    Antipsychotics
    Mood Stabilizers
    Calcium Channel Blockers

The New Yorker; Don't Believe All You Read

Columnist Jerome Groopman is an MD who writes about health issues for the New Yorker. He is a good writer and comes across as a caring physician - and if you value your mental health you will not read him.

Each time he appears he writes in the persona of the concerned practitioner. Yet the arc of his narrative is always the same. Open - to dramatic scene of suffering (tug at heart strings); Cut to concerned doctor, and how he got started; Intercut episodes of concerned doctor, patient, patient's nearest and dearest, other doctors. The narrative comes to a close as puzzled, but good-guy doctor makes progress, but does not achieve total cure.

That April Fresh Fabric Softener Could Be Hiding a Toxic Surprise

Yesterday I happened to catch a commercial for a popular fabric softener that actually brags that you can still smell its “fresh scent” a full week after laundry day. Last year this same fabric softener was touting the fact that it contains twice as many softening ingredients as the leading value brand. It’s interesting that the maker of this fabric softener advertises abundant softeners and lingering scents to the American consumer as if they are good things. In reality, many common fabric softener ingredients expose the body to harmful chemicals. And the powerful, won’t-go-away synthetic fragrances are there to cover up the nasty smell created by all those chemical softeners.

Perfect Bridal Hairstyle For A Perfect Wedding

Bridal occasions require some effort to achieve success, with proper planning a key ingredient. Bridal hairstyles are the same; they require thought, consideration and a solid plan. There are many important factors to consider when choosing a bridal hairstyle.

The length and texture of your hair will determine what can actually be achieved. Next, your bridal hairstyle needs to complement the gown you will be wearing. For example, if your gown is low cut off the shoulder, you should consider choosing a bridal hairstyle where some hair falls down onto your shoulders so not to leave that area bare. You can still consider an upstyle, but you should make sure that some hair is down, even if it’s only a little, to soften the style.

Let Go Of Worry

How often do you catch yourself worrying?

When I was a kid my mom used to say to me, "95% of what you worry about never happens." I think she recognized that I was the "worrying type" and was trying to help ease my mind. Although this rarely worked, I appreciated her sentiment and know now that she was right.

For as long as I can remember, I've been prone to worrying. I continue to work on this, let it go, forgive myself for it, and choose different ways of being in the face of my fear. And, I still catch myself worrying more than I'd like - about the future, about my body, about how things will turn out, about what people think about me, about money, about the well-being of my loved ones, about the state of the world, and much more.

8 Harmful Skincare Ingredients To Avoid

Good skin epitomizes good health. It is the first layer of ourselves which we expose to everyone we meet. The external ‘us’ symbolizes our true state of being, one that denotes how we care for ourselves.

However, with all the attention on optimum skin health, do you really know what is in your skincare? Most of the products we purchase have names and words that are beyond our comprehension. To add salt to injury, they plaster pictures of beautiful women with great skin, to denote that our skin has potentials of looking the same with their skincare. Then there is the tough choice of choosing ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ skincare treatments. And by taking away all the attention from the high-sounding ingredients, we apply these potions believing that we are on our way to fairer skin.

Healthy Ways To Prevent Hair Loss

It is interesting to note that many are unaware of the hair growth process and was taken for granted. At some point we took months to decide for our next haircut due to the microscopic and imperceptible occurrence of the hair growth process. Did you know that humans have more hair per follicles compared to chimps and gorillas?

Hair follicle is a small pouch-like structure below the skin. Each hair grows from its own individual hair follicle. The keratinized, hardened tissue that grows from the follicle is the hair shaft. It is what we see and brush daily.

Hair grows differently in each person depending on several factors such as age, weight, metabolism, hormones, ethnicity, medication and others. Hair can grow on the scalp, eyebrows, legs, backs, underarms, and genital areas. These are the thicker, fully pigmented hair which most people consider as ‘real hair’.

Fighting Skin Aging The Healthy Way

Birthdays happen. You feel older. You start worrying about the effects of aging on every part of your body, especially your skin. Just mentioning the word ‘aging’ is enough to send many women cringing. Don’t you wish you could just erase them away? Revitol can help.

Among the factors that cause aging skin are lifestyle, diet, environmental pollution, harsh products, gravity and stress. They plainly advertise our age, or worse still, add years to it.

Basically there are two causes of aging skin: extrinsic aging and intrinsic aging.

Extrinsic aging can be tackled. It all depends on our lifestyle. In other words, we can choose to delay this aging process. Harmful sun exposure, facial expression, gravity, sleeping position and smoking are the main culprits of extrinsic aging. Within just a few minutes of exposure to the sun, we can start to see visible changes in our skin. It becomes dehydrated, red, burned and sometimes painful to the touch. Ouch! Dermatologists term the detrimental effects of the sun on skin as photo-aging. Signs of photo-aging include wrinkles, pigmentation, sagging and rough skin, loss of lustre and brown spots. Revitol with its combination of plant based ingredients can help ensure optimal protection against harmful free radical induced in these environmental factors.

Screen Yourself From The Sun

When you stay outdoors, you are actually risking yourself to sunburn. Even though you think you have given yourself a layer of protection with sunscreen, however beware that these chemicals can also increase your skin’s sensitivity to the ultraviolet light. This can happen since certain drugs and other substances can cause the skin to burn at a lower intensity of sunlight or to burn in less time than it normally should.

A known risk factor in skin cancer is exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet. Since 1973, the death rate caused by skin cancer has increased to 50%. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and 59,940 new cases was reported in 2007.

Hair Dyeing Precautions

Have you dyed your hair to another color? It may be a difficult decision for some to change their hair color. How safe are the hair dyes? Even though some studies have found the connection between certain cancers to hair dyes, there are also some studies that have found the opposites. Compared to other cosmetic color additives, most hair dyes don’t have to go through safety testing before it goes to the shelves. The main ingredient in hair dyes is coal-tar when it first came out. Now, most hair dyes are made from petroleum sources. However, due to the same compounds found, they are still considered to be coal-tar dyes by the FDA.

Big Bags – A Pain In The Neck

One of the biggest fashion trends this season is to be seen toting a huge handbag. Jumbo sized bags are the rage and all leading designers have come up with exquisite pieces that may just be a strain on the pocket, and elsewhere.

Hefty bags can cause back pain, shoulder and neck pain, headaches and even arthritis, warns Dr Jane Sadler of Baylor Medical Centre in Garland, Texas.

“I see so many women with neck pain and headaches, and what I usually do is look for their bags and pick them up,” says Sadler. “Their bags generally weigh anywhere from 7 to 10 pounds!”

Such extra large bags mean that women are carrying more items and this can cause an imbalance when walking or standing, another case of poor posture and ergonomics.

Blepharoplasty – The Double Eyelid Surgery

Statistics shows that approximately 50% of East Asians possess double eyelids, while the other half shows little or no sign of crease formation (single eyelid). Even when present, the Asian crease differ significantly from a typical Westerner crease. In general, the Asian upper eyelid crease forms closer to the eyelashes, is shaped differently, and is sometimes incomplete or broken into multiple folds.

Irrespective of ethnicity, double eyelids are typically considered more attractive by most people. The absence of a superior palpebral fold (the crease) makes the upper eyelid drapes like a single, unruffled curtain. With double eyelids, eyes appear bigger and thus give the impression of youth. The lack of excessive skin and fat also make eyes look more energetic. The platform of exposed skin between the crease and the eyelashes allow ladies to apply makeup more effectively too.

6 Healthy Reasons To Drink More Water

These days, people are carrying bottled water everywhere and has become the second most popular drink after soft drinks. A new report had found that the benefits of drinking water may have been oversold and has caused a stir. The eight glasses a day rule is not based on scientific evidence and maybe more than a guideline.

Although we may not need to drink too much, there are plenty of reasons to drink water be it plain water or in any other forms of fluids or foods.

Large amounts of water are lost each day by our body. We loose water from skin evaporation, breathing, urine and stool and these happens continuously. Therefore, drinking water is essential as a nutrient loader the body needs as it is essential to replace these losses every day.

Virgin Coconut Oil – Miraculous Oil That Does Wonders

Among the products that were deemed to have notorious saturated fat by the health community were coconut oil, coconut milk and grated coconut flakes. Every health enthusiast avoided these until new research studies started to debunk the myth that such products were actually unhealthy to consume. In the midst of this restored reputation, the wellness industry produces a new health superstar, Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, which is claimed by many in USA to be the “miracle oil”.

The Most Misunderstood Oil

Coconut oil has been inundated with bad reputation because of its saturated fat status. In the past, nobody made any distinction between the good and bad saturated fats. They are all considered to be harmful because they are high in cholesterol and really detrimental to heart health.

Are Kids Who Meditate Compassionate, Altruistic And Happier As Adults?

Are kids who meditate happier as adults? Are they more compassionate and altruistic? Or, having been raised by somewhat "kooky" parents do they tend to be a little nutty themselves? Written with the idealism of a meditator pursuing a career in law, the following brief essay sheds light, in ways this prospective law student may not yet understand, on the divergent and often conflicting professional experiences of many adult meditators.

Here's what Sam Alexander, who learned to meditate as a child, has to say:

I grew up in a comfortable upper-middle class suburb of Los Angeles for the first few years of my life. I was surrounded by comfort and abundance, and wanted for nothing. When I was eight years old, my parents separated and my brother and I moved with my mother to a tiny town in Virginia founded by the Integral Yoga Institute. This town, Yogaville, is a living, breathing community based on the teachings of Swami Satchidananda, a renowned Hindu spiritual master who famously opened Woodstock with words of peace and love.

What To Do Before Stepping Out Into The Sun

Wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots. They sound depressing, but we will all have to deal with the signs of aging eventually.

Constant exposure to the sun speeds up the aging process but don’t wail just yet as there are a number of things you can do to reduce the effects of sun on your skin.

1 Hour Before Stepping Out Into The Sun

Choose the right type of clothing. Clothes made from tightly woven fabric are the best for sun protection. And though you may groan at this, darker clothes provide more protection than lighter ones. To minimize the effects of humidity, go for materials made from 100% cotton.

Living The Ayurveda Way

If you were to consult with an Ayurvedic therapist, you would likely receive a diagnosis of your doshic imbalances. The practitioner would then provide you with a list of food types that you should and shouldn’t eat, possibly prescribe medicinal herbs for you to take, prescribe treatments, and provide a series of other lifestyle modifications and routines such as yoga postures for you to practice.

Ayurvedic science calls upon us to live our lives in a particular way with the intention of bringing as much balance to our doshas as possible. Much of this lifestyle centers on how and what we eat and drink, as one of the most fundamental components of Ayurvedic science states that a strong digestion leads to a healthy body. While we can make sophisticated modifications of diet and lifestyle to resolve imbalances of our doshas, it is more important to understand the attributes of food (hot-cold, dry-oily, heavy-light, and so forth) and what effect they will have on our systems in the moment. In this section I will share with you general measures we can all take that can be practiced regardless of how our doshas are imbalanced, and the following section will provide very basic and simple ways to resolve issues specific to each dosha.

10 Tips for Making Peace with Your Body

Two percent. That’s how many women chose the word “beautiful” to describe themselves in a recent worldwide study led by researchers from Harvard University and the London School of Economics. It’s a disturbingly low number, and clearly more than two percent of the women on this planet are beautiful, we just need to retrain ourselves to see it—and believe it.

Here are 10 tips to making peace with your body:

1. Make a list of “nots” you’ve encountered in your life, i.e. not thin enough, not enough like what you see in the media, not pretty enough. Realize how many there are. Realize that it’s a list of demands from other people and institutions, and that you don’t have to meet any requirements other than those you place on yourself.

We reached out to our Health & Fitness Expert, Stephanie Mansour (CEO of Step It Up with Steph) for the buzz on some of the hottest fitness trends for 2011. Here’s her take on the top 5 coolest workouts and the best bang for your gym time:

“Depending on what your fitness goals are and what your lifestyle is like, there are many great new ways to get in shape, stay in shape, and even change your body shape!

1. Bootcamp classes are excellent kicks in the booty to lose weight, build strength, and tone up FAST. These classes are great because they utiilize circuit and interval training, which are most important for weightloss. Bootcamps and circuit training work with intervals: one minute you will be doing as many push ups as you can, and the next you’ll be sprinting. By changing up exercises and moving from one thing to another, you’ll never get bored AND you’ll keep your body guessing what’s coming next, which makes losing weight easy.

Sleeping Pills: Are They Worth It?

There’s more evidence about the fallacy of relying on a sleeping pill every night. Even though we Americans take enough of them every year to put more than 250 million of us to sleep for two hundred hours, the people who actually turn to a pill for help are not only sleeping less and taking more, they’re may be endangering their lives. Many of these drugs are so-called hypnotics and can interfere with a person’s natural arousal defense in the dark, the ability to wake up if something goes wrong. And sleeping pills have been implicated in a third of all drug-related deaths, whether intentional (suicide) or accidental. They’re especially lethal in combination with liquor or for older adults, whose bodies ordinarily need more time to break down drugs.

Silly science, silly inventions and other 2011

An end of year tradition — now in its second year — I’d like to share some of the studies I failed to mention during this passing year, and pay tribute to some outstandingly ridiculous achievements in food, health and weight-loss.

Beware of the beard bugs

Fall season is celebrated with many beautiful and tasty traditions, and one fall event I really look forward to is the Ig Nobel ceremony. The Ig Nobel awards are a parody of the Nobel Prizes, and have been awarded for the past 20 years for funny, absurd or unexpected (but all too real and methodically correct) scientific research in a ceremony attended by all too real Nobel laureates at Harvard University.

Sneaky sleep stealers: 8 things keeping you up at night

When sleep disturbances persist for longer than a month, it's important to identify any underlying causes. Consider whether these common triggers could be contributing to your restless nights.

Pain

In one study, 15% of Americans reported suffering from chronic pain, and two-thirds also reported having sleep problems. Back pain, headaches, and temporomandibular joint syndrome (problems with the jaw muscles) are the main causes of pain-related sleep loss.

Mental illness and stress

Insomnia is both a symptom and a cause of depression and anxiety. Since the brain uses the same neurotransmitters for sleep and mood, it's often hard to know which starts first. Stressful situations or events, such as money or marital problems, often kick off insomnia that can become a long-term problem.

Get More From Your Usual Stroll: Tips for Walking With Weights

Want to get more out of your work out? Add weights! Even light weights (2-5 lbs) can increase the rate at which you burn both fat and calories, all in the same amount of time as your usual routine. In addition to losing weight, you will also increase your muscle tone and improve your cardiovascular health.

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your weighted workout!

Using Ankle Weights:

1. Don’t Use Heavy Weights. Your goal is to improve your cardio rate, not add strength.

2. Ankle Weights should be tight. Don’t let them be loose around your foot as this will affect your natural stride.

Foods to make holiday stress disappear right now

Unlike many people, I prefer the weeks leading up to Christmas and New Year’s over the actual holiday days. I love finding the perfect presents, wrapping them by the fire and baking holiday goodies. (Ahem, healthier-for-you ones like these 100-calorie cookies.)

Despite my cheer, I eventually end up stressed and cranky because I spread myself too thin trying to celebrate Christmas with both sides of my husband’s and my family (who live 400+ miles apart!) So for those of you who are likewise overwhelmed with all the holiday preparations and are cranky NOW (or will be soon, like me) here are some tips for what you can eat and what you can do to beat holiday stress. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to promote unhealthy, emotional eating. There are some healthy foods and solutions backed by science that can help.

Best and worst ways to eat (and drink) for energy

Busy much? Coffee isn’t the only way to get through the day. New drinks and bars are popping up everywhere, providing a jolt of energy (from caffeine) in grab-and-go packages. Unfortunately, many of these products also contain added sugars or other health-harming additives that set you up for a crash.

The good news is that lots of foods without energy on their labels boost pep as well. "There’s nothing magic about energy foods," says Nancy Clark, RD, author of Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook. Here what to pick and skip:

Worst: Energy Drinks

These beverages, like Red Bull, are caffeine-and-sugar cocktails that come in 8-ounce cans. Caffeine boosts cognitive performance, and glucose (the brain’s main source of fuel) gives an added jolt. Many of these drinks also include a rain forest fruit called guarana, which contains still more caffeine.

What Would Make You Stop Tanning?

Despite the fact that baking in the sun—or in a tanning bed—has been shown to significantly raise the risk of skin cancer, people still apparently find a tan sexy. In a recent study, researchers at Emory University posted pictures on hotornot.com to test whether "hotness" ratings would change when the same woman was shown with her natural complexion and then a slightly darker skin tone. The researchers found that the tan version was twice as likely to be rated as more attractive.

Clay Routledge, professor of psychology at North Dakota State University, told the ABC news website that we don't always respond rationally to a health risk. "No one would be surprised that girls say they tan because it makes them look good. What is surprising is that if you remind them that it puts them at higher risk for cancer, we find that it makes them want to tan more," he says. When doctors try to scare people away from something, explains Routledge, they respond by seeking comfort in precisely the behavior that puts them at risk. Smokers, for instance, turn to smoking when they're freaked out about lung cancer.

Sleep deprived? Your looks may suffer

A good night's sleep tends to leave you feeling refreshed, alert, and upbeat. According to a new study, it may also make you look healthier and more attractive to others.

To test whether there's a grain of truth in the notion of "beauty sleep," researchers in Sweden took photographs of 23 men and women ages 18 to 31 after they'd slept for eight hours. They then repeated the process, except this time the researchers kept the volunteers up for 31 hours straight after allowing them to sleep for just five hours the previous night. (For both snapshots, participants were instructed to wear no makeup, keep their hair loose, and perform the same grooming beforehand.)

The 10 Best Weight-Loss Tips of 2011

Dieting sucks and never seems to work long-term anyway. These easy habits will slim you down just in time for all the holiday parties. By Zoe Ruderman

Losing pounds doesn't have to be torture (we're looking at you, cayenne-pepper cleanse). Adopt at least three of these behaviors — they're simple to integrate into your day-to-day routine, and all are enthusiastically backed by nutritionists — and you'll be thinner and healthier in days. (Plus, the weight will stay off.)

1. SNACK, BUT SMARTLY

Grazing between meals used to be on the weight-loss hit list. But nutritionists now know that it's better to satisfy a craving with healthy grub than ignore it and risk a junk-food binge later. The best picks are filling, protein-packed snacks, such as one stick of string cheese, a tablespoon of peanut butter on a piece of fruit, or a medium-size bowl of edamame.

10 Ways to Beat the Blues

Depression is a serious mental health disorder. However, people may experience the sad emotions associated with depression for reasons that can be prevented and corrected. No matter what your age, you can learn from these ten simple tips. Like many tips lists, these are easy to read. The real test is whether you will implement these changes in your life to gain their benefits!
1. Floss your teeth. There are clear and consistent relationships between tooth loss and depression. It's not only that you look better when your teeth are in reasonably good shape but that you feel better emotionally and will have better health. My dentist, in reacting to this news, noted that most people don't think about their teeth as part of their bodies, so they don't fret when their teeth need to be removed the way they would if, Jack Bauer-style, someone tried to remove part of their fingers. They figure when it's time for them to go, then out they should go. Your teeth do matter, however, and as you get older they will matter even more to your overall health.
2. Exercise. It seems that every week I have reason to extol the virtues of exercise. Here's a new twist on a familiar topic in this blog. A large scale investigation of studies conducted on a total of almost 650 older adults showed beneficial effects of exercise treatment; this effect is found repeatedly in studies of young adults. Exercise gets the endorphins to kick in, raising your mood, and also helps you to feel better about your physical abilities. Ultimately the more physically competent you feel, the better your mood, and a positive cycle gets going. As I've also shown repeatedly on this blog, exercise keeps your brain working more efficiently, improving your cognitive functioning and making you a better thinker.
3. Control your diet. Lowering your intake of high calorie, high sodium, and high sugar foods (a.k.a. junk food) will reduce your chances of experiencing depressive symptoms no matter what your age. Over time, the benefits will continue to accumulate. Older adults with the condition known as "metabolic syndrome," essentially a combination of pre-diabetes, overweight, and high cholesterol, have higher rates of depressive symptoms. Not only does your body work more effectively on healthier fuel, but you will also be less likely to experience such depression-generating conditions as chronic lower back pain and arthritis. A recent study suggested that depressed people eat more chocolate perhaps as an effort to self-medicate. Keep reading to find out better ways to treat your mood that don't compromise your diet.
4. Get enough sleep. We all know the frayed nerves and fatigue that go along with being sleep-deprived. Sleep disorders can certainly be a symptom of depression but depression can also emerge from chronic failure to put in a solid night of z-time.Researchers have found that treatment of insomnia can reduce and even prevent depression in adults of all ages. Proper sleep habits will also reduce other problems associated with depression, including many chronic health problems. Try to get 7 hours of sleep a night, at least.
5. Maintain sufficient vitamin levels. Researchers have found that many older people are vitamin-D deprived. According to one study, vitamin D protects the brain from vascular injury and improves overall metabolic and cardiovascular functioning. In other words, even if you follow Jack LaLanne's advice and stay away from dairy products, you should at least find some way to provide this vital dietary supplement.
6. Work on your relationships. Study after study shows that social support in the form of marital closeness, and good relations with children, friends, and grandchildren are important ways to protect yourself from depression. It's not only what you get from these relationships but also what you give. Being a mentor or support for someone else, as I've discussed elsewhere in this blog, is a surefire route to fulfillment.
7. Turn down your iPod. Hearing loss and depression have a long history of association. People with sensory impairments of all kinds are more likely to have less positive moods. Though some sensory losses are not preventable, hearing loss (for the most part) is. Turning up the volume of what goes into your headphones, or even wearing headphones at all, is a good way to kill off the tiny hair cells in your cochlea- the part of your ear containing the sensory receptors. So don't. Keep the volume low and minimize the time you do spend with the music piped into your eardrums.
8. Don't let aging get to you. My former doctoral student, Mark Weinberger, and I just completed a study in which we report on the relationship between people's views about aging and the experience of depressive symptoms. People who become preoccupied with their own physical symptoms are more likely to report a sad mood. It's true that depression can color your world negatively but it works both ways. Don't think too much about aging other than to take the steps to prevent what's preventable.
9. Watch out for falls. One of the great sources of depression if not death is hip fracture resulting from a fall. As we get older, our balance suffers unless we take active steps to maintain it. Practice simple exercises -such as standing on one leg- and although you may not become a trapeze artist as a result you will be more likely to stay on your feet if you trip over a stair, broken sidewalk, or some other obstruction. Maintaining your flexibility and keeping your muscles taut through such exercises as yoga, stretching, and resistance training are additional ways to avoid falling. You can start this no matter what your age and you'll start to see results right away.
10. Get treatment when you need it. Depression is a treatable condition that responds not only to medication but to newer forms of psychotherapy that have now become the staple of the psychologist's toolkit. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, which works on fixing your thoughts and your behaviors (as the term implies) is highly effective as is interpersonal therapy, which adds social skill training into the mix. Older adults tend to be reluctant to seek psychotherapy. Many prefer to complain to a physician about their bodily complaints rather than to admit to feeling sad or anxious. If you're feeling the characteristic signs and symptoms, some of which you can read about here, seek help. No matter what your age, you can benefit from psychological treatment.
With an improved outlook on life you'll be better able to take advantage of the other 9 tips you've just read about. Not only will you feel better but you'll live longer and get more out of the years you have.
